Starting Kindergarten

THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

After the first day, all students will start at 9:00 am.  In the mornings, please gather in the courtyard area where your child will receive a name tag which will be worn for the first few weeks at school.  Teachers will escort students back to the courtyard for you to pick them up at 3:00 pm. Kindergarten students are supervised by the classroom teacher until each child is picked up.

TEACHERS WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR TAKING KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS TO AFTER SCHOOL CARE.

PLAYGROUND

During the first few weeks, the children are kept in a small shady seated area for lunch and recess until they are more confident to deal with the large, busier playground and its rules.  The Kindergarten teachers are on a special duty roster so the children at play are always supervised and can always find a familiar adult with a friendly smile.

KINDERGARTEN INFORMATION EVENING – IMPORTANT DATE FOR YOUR DIARY

An information evening for parents and carers will be held on Thursday 12th February at 6:00 pm.  During the evening, we will discuss school routines, a typical kindergarten day, our home reading program, library and more.  We will also be able to answer some of your questions.

TOILETS

There are toilets on the same floor as the Kindergarten classrooms, which are strictly for their use only.  They are safe, clean and supervised.

Kindergarten children often have accidents and we rely on donations of spare clothes, which we keep in each Kindergarten room. If you know your child is prone to accidents please keep a spare set of clothes in their bag.

PREPARING BEFORE THE BIG DAY

Being prepared before school starts will help you and your child feel confident before the big day.  This page shows a checklist of tasks to prepare for starting Kindergarten.  This way you will know that you are on track and ready for school.

à Write your child’s name on all school clothing, including uniform, shoes, lunchbox, sunhat, jacket, backpack and reading bag

à Involve your child in organising their school things and recognising their name

à Go shopping together and go to a public toilet. Teach boys how to use a urinal if they don’t already know

àLet your child practise putting on school shoes and walking in them

à Organise a picnic. Pack a lunchbox, encourage your child to open it and eat the food by themselves

à Practise opening and drinking from a drink bottle (let your child choose one that they can open)

THE BIG DAY!                                                     Ã Be positive about the first day

  Ã Pack recess and lunch

Ã Tie your child’s hair back

  Ã Take photos!

  Ã Relax!

The first few weeks of school will be tiring for your child.  Ensure that your child gets lots of sleep and try to chat to them about their day at school.  Give your child a healthy breakfast and make sure that your child always knows who will be picking them up after school. Try to start a home reading routine each afternoon but it is also important that your child still has time to relax, play outside and do things that they enjoy.
