A series that I would like to recommend is Mermaids curse. This is a great antidote to the rainbow fairy/mermaid phenomena that is out there. It is a wonderful adventure story for girls (although boys will enjoy it too). It is the tale of a young girl who discovers she is part mermaid and her adventures to overthrow the evil mermaid queen. We read it to our 7 year old and she loved it. There are 3 books in the series.

Another series that is great for fairy lovers is  Fairy realm by Emily Rodda. This is great for kindy plus (but we enjoyed reading it as adults too). It is the story of a young girl Jessie who moves to the blue mountains to live with her grandmother and discovers that her grandmother was a fairy queen. Jessie then goes on a quest to save the fairy kingdom and has many adventures along the way. This is wonderful adventure series for young girls as it has action, but no really scary bits. there are two series with 10 books in all.

An Emily Rodda series for boys and girls (6+ although our 5 yr old enjoys listening too, but it can be a bit dark and scary)  is Deltora Quest. We have borrowed the audio books from Newtown library and we listen to them on long car trips. They keep us all gripped as we listen to the story of young Leif’s quest to save his kingdom from the evil Shadow Lord. There are lots of scary monsters and battles to keep young listeners interested (and a bit scared). There is a series 2 which isn’t very good, but it improves with series 3. Series one is the best of the three and contains 8 books.

I am looking forward to what other have had successes with, as well as failures, so we know what to avoid!
